Senior Data Scientist Svyat Vergun is a quiet but influential force here at GK. He’s a researcher, a builder, a developer and an outdoor enthusiast. He’s also a dabbler in graphic design, and is responsible for GK’s current logo. Svyat discusses some of his diverse enthusiasms here.
Can you tell me a little about yourself and your interests outside of work?
Outside of work I like hiking, sailing, biking, ice skating, skiing. I started skateboarding this spring for the first time and I liked the balance and feel of different forces while moving on the board. This summer, unfortunately, I had a hiking deficit.
What brought you to GK, and why is it a good fit for you?
GK’s innovative tech and smart developers brought me here. I like working on modern, useful tools and at GK I have the ability to get creative and play around with state of the art technology.
How did you get into the field of data science?
I was always interested in math, numbers, laws, predictions. In graduate school I worked with machine learning using patient MRI data and I wanted to get into the data science industry after I graduated.
What do you most enjoy working on?
I enjoy understanding data populations and using code to build applications which have degrees of artificial intelligence.
It’s fun to build a “robot” that will do some useful task for you. It’s also fun when the robot is very successful and marketable.
What’s the most important aspect of your role?
Researching, testing, experimenting, building, developing. Being creative with technology and data are important for me.
Do you have a favorite mantra or quote?
Nope. I have a joke though: How do you throw a Mars-themed party? You get Elon to planet.
Who do you most admire at GK and why?
I admire the company the most, with no favorites.
They are a lean group of young, smart, versatile workers who get projects done.
