Floor Noise

Privacy

A publication about recorded conversations keeps almost no record of its readers.

On the reader’s device

Floor Noise consists of static HTML pages, generated ahead of time, plus one stylesheet kept on this domain. Not a line of JavaScript appears in them. Visits are not counted by any analytics package, and nothing on a page belongs to an advertiser, a social network, a video host, a font service or an image service, so opening a page means talking to this server only. Cookies and browser storage go untouched. No page asks for a login, a comment or a subscription, which leaves a reader anonymous to the site apart from the technical traces described below.

In the web server

The site is served by nginx, which writes one access log line per request. That line holds the connecting IP, the time, the requested path, the status code, the response size, a referring URL where the browser supplies it, and the browser’s self-description. A request that fails may be noted, with its IP, in an error log. Logs rotate daily, and each file is deleted 14 days later. They are consulted only when something breaks or a crawler misbehaves, and nobody outside the server’s administration ever receives them, whether for marketing, profiling or study.

Correspondence

Anyone emailing editor@greenkeytech.com shares an email address and a message. Those are kept in order to answer. Nothing is forwarded, there is no list to be added to, and on request the thread is wiped.

Citations lead to regulators, courts and research papers. Once a reader follows one, that publisher’s servers and policies apply, and Floor Noise has no influence over either.

Copies and removal

From any country, a reader can ask by email for a copy of the personal data held, or for its removal. All of it together amounts to a fortnight’s server records and whatever emails passed between the two sides.
